Pyramids near Cancun Mexico
Cancun Mexico is located in the former heart of the Mayan world. Marvelous historic places like Chichen Itza and Chetumal are only a few hours away and tourist trips are offered daily.
The Chichen Itza ruins where build by the Maya people of the area between the years 550 A.D. and 900 A.D. They where probably used for ritual and religious purposes. Only about hundred years later however, the buildings where abandoned and the jungle took them back. Archaeologists have not yet been able to find an answer to the question, why Chichen Itza was suddenly abandoned, and still today, it remains a complete mystery.
If you decide for a day trip to Chichen Itza -- a must do for every Cancun vacations -- stay until the evening! In the evening, there is a spectacular light show that makes Chichen Itza even more mysterious and attractive to visit.
When being in Chichen Itza, you will find the largest building being El Castillo. The pyramid 91 steps on each of its four sides. Added together and plus the one for the summit, it equals 365. One step for each day of the year.
