Location and Maps of Cancun Mexico
Cancun is located in the eastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsular. It is just south of the Strait of Yucatan that divides the Mexican Gulf and the Caribbean Sea. At the other side of the Strait of Yucatan, about 400 miles from the State of Quintana Roo is Cuba. Towards the south, the Yucatan peninsula borders Belize and Guatemala.
The city of Cancun is actually a few miles away from the Cancun hotel area. Most hotels are built on a long but narrow peninsula, so that they have a beach to both sides. The front side faces the Caribbean Sea, while at the other side there is large Lagoon. This area is known as the
Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera). The Zona Hotelera is several miles long and connected to Cancun City by a good, four lane avenue.
In Cancun City itself are mostly the lower priced hotels. Cancun City is a planned city that was build in the seventies when Cancun was innicially started as a vacation resort by the Mexican government. Cancun City was planned to be the service center for the resort.
In Cancun City, you can find everything you need, from banks and modern shopping centers to first class restaurants and tourist shops to buy souveniers or city maps. Some of the clubs and bars of Cancun's famous nightlife are also in the center of Cancun City.
- Avenida Tulum: Boulevard in downtown Cancun with many shopping centers, banks, restaurents, and the central bus station.
- Boulevard Kukulcán: Avenue that connects Cancun City with the Zona Hotelera, Punta Cancun, Punta Nizuc, and the Airport at Puerto Juarez.
